While most cosmetic procedures are relatively safe, this does not mean that each surgery goes exactly according plan. Recovery problems, unforeseen complications, side effects and low skilled surgeons can all contribute to problematic results. Rhinoplasty, or nose job surgery, is one of today’s most common plastic surgeries, but like all procedures, it carries some level of risk. If you’ve had the unfortunate experience of having a bad nose job, there are ways to repair the damage and improve your appearance. With a revision rhinoplasty surgery, you can finally achieve the look you want and eliminate the effects of a badly performed nose job.

Common Reasons to Have Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery

There are a number of reasons to have revision rhinoplasty, from a past botched nose job to a severe nasal injury. Some patients may feel that their doctor removed too much bone, cartilage and tissue during their nose job, resulting in a nose that looks too small for the face. A skilled revision surgeon can correct this problem, sometimes with the use of an augmentation that relies on cartilage from other areas of your body or even a synthetic implant.

In other cases, patients may find that their first surgery did not remove enough tissue. This is generally the easiest problem to correct, because it typically involves simply completing what the initial surgery should have accomplished in the first place. Another common request is to restore the patient’s nose to its original, natural appearance. While the success of your revision surgery will depend largely on what the surgeon has to work with, chances are strong that your doctor can correct the damage and achieve a satisfying result.

Preparing Yourself for Surgery

Before you have revision rhinoplasty surgery, it is important to be both physically and mentally prepared. Always spend some time carefully researching the procedure and talking about your concerns, questions and goals with your doctor.

In addition to understanding the potential risks and benefits of this surgery, you also need to have realistic expectations. If you go into your surgery expecting a perfect, flawless result, you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. Talk to your doctor about this aspect of the surgery in order to clear up any misconceptions you may have about your potential results.

After Your Surgery

While you need to prepare carefully for your surgery, you also need to make sure that you take good care of yourself after your revision rhinoplasty. Arrange for the proper follow up care and always follow the advice and directions of your doctor to the letter. Also be prepared for the unexpected. While the goal is to correct the damage from a previous nose job, this may not always be entirely possible. In some cases, your doctor may even recommend additional surgery and other procedures to correct problem areas. By preparing yourself for this possibility, you will be better able to make the decision that is right for your needs.

Rhinoplasty is surgery on the nose. The procedure can be done for medical reasons, breathing problems, birth defects, or injury, or it may simply be done for aesthetic cosmetic purposes.

Rhinoplasty Procedures

There are two types of rhinoplasty procedures. The first type is known as an open procedure. With an open procedure, a minor incision is made between the nostrils, enabling them to lift that portion of nasal skin off the nose for better visibility of the cartilage and bone. This procedure gives the surgeon more control over the patient’s nose because they are able to see the bone and cartilage. An open rhniplasty will leave a scar; however, for a skilled surgeon the scar will not be visible from a standard viewing distance.

The other type is closed rhinoplasty, where incisions are made on the inside of the nose, thus concealing any evidence of surgery. However, in some cases your surgeon may not be able to get to the target areas in order to perform the surgery sufficiently.

There are advantages and disadvantages of either type of rhinoplasty surgery. Therefore, it is necessary to consult with your surgeon to determine which type would be best suited for your situation.

Finding the Right Surgeon

Although nose shaping has been around for many decades, it does require incredible ability by the surgeon. Your doctor should have the proper certification and experience necessary to perform the given procedure.

Interview at least two or three plastic surgeons, he, or she should be board certified, and have a minimum of 5 years experience. During the consultation, ask how many rhinoplasties they have done in the last year, consider how well the doctor listen to your ideas, ask to see examples of their work and what can they do for you.

Likewise, if you are going to have general anesthesia, be sure the American Board of Anesthesiology has certified your anesthesiologist. In addition, make sure that you can be rapidly admitted to a nearby quality hospital in the event of unforeseen complications.

Rhinoplasty Fees

Surgeons fee: $3,500
Anesthesiologist: $700
Facility fee: $800
Average Total Cost: $5,000

Rhinoplasty is usually not covered by insurance unless the procedure is performed for medical reasons, e.g. birth defect, or accident. Therefore, you should consult the surgeon’s office about payment plans or seek out a finance company that specializes in medical loans. If your insurer says that it is covered, be sure to get pre-authorization from them before the operation.

Complications

If you are careful and selective about whom you choose for your surgeon, anesthesiologist, and of course operating facility, there is only a less than 5% chance of any complications.

However, a possible risk you will need to consider and accept before having cosmetic nose surgery is revision rhinoplasty. First, because nose surgery is a difficult procedure and secondly, following the surgery your nose can change in ways which cannot be predicted beforehand. It is recommended to wait at least one year if a revision rhinoplasty is needed.

Recovery

A splint is applied to the top of the nose to keep it in place while healing and gauze packing is inserted for a couple of days to protect the septum from moving and minimizing bleeding. The splint is usually removed within a week.

Anti-inflammatory medication and a painkiller are prescribed for swelling and discomfort, as well as an antibiotic to prevent infection. You should also apply ice, elevate the head, and avoid blowing your nose and wearing eyeglasses.

Finally, few people ever regret getting a nose job. It has the potential to create a new appearance and lend new confidence. Just be careful

This summer I was planning to get the procedure done but I can only open up 2 weeks then I have to go to my college orientation for 2 days. I would then be home for another 2 weeks before I go to a ranch in Wyoming for a vacation. Would this schedule give me enough time to heal and still allow me to enjoy my vacation? I would really like to get the procedure done this summer, but if it comes down to it I geuss I could wait untill next summer.
I havent had a consultation yet, I just want to see if I should pay for one now or if I should wait for a better time.

As you may already know, rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure which is used to correct malformations of the nose, often for deviated septum or a broken nose not healing correctly.

However, you may not be aware that many patients who undergo rhinoplasty procedures can also greatly benefit from a chin augmentation. And, the best news is that these two procedures can be combined and performed all on the same day by your plastic surgeon.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is major surgery which corrects malformations of the nose to help improve the facial appearance of the patient and improve breathing function. This and breast augmentation are two of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States today.

Also, more commonly referred to as a “nose job,” this procedure is performed by plastic surgeons across the U.S. in response to the increasing demand from men and women.

What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation surgery consists of an implant being placed to help correct underdevelopment of the natural jawline. The implant is used to help create a more prominent chin in those born with a weaker jawline.

Why Are These Combined?

Often patients needing rhinoplasty also have small chins. Or the new nose makes an average chin appear smaller in proportion. And a small chin makes the nose appear larger than it really is.

However, when a nose job is performed it only fixes the issues of the nose structure and not the issues associated with the weak chin. By combining the two procedures, your plastic surgeon can fix your nose and use an implant on the jawline to help balance out the look of your face.

Generally, patients who undergo both procedures are happier with their overall post-surgical results than those who choose one procedure over the other.

How are the Procedures Performed?

Both can be performed on an out-patient basis. You will be given general anesthesia and can plan on being in surgery for a little more than two hours.

Generally, the chin implant will be done first before the rhinoplasty. A small incision is made on the jawline and the implant is installed by securing it with small titanium screws into the jaw bone.

The rhinoplasty is started by making an incision in the columella tissue of the nose. The columella tissue is located between the nostrils. The bump on the nose is then removed by using a hand rasp or power rasp, depending on the severity of the deformity.

Following this, the nasal bones are broken and repositioned into their proper place. Once completed, the nose it placed in a cast.

The Recovery

You can expect at least five days of healing. At this point, the casting will be removed and the nose will completely heal over time.

If you are considering having rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, or a combination of both procedures, it is advisable that you contact a Board Certified plastic surgeon in your area to schedule a consultation with. The plastic surgeon can then answer all of your questions and concerns.

my winter break is 2 weeks and summer vacation is over 2 months. i wanted to know which is the better time to get it to allow my nose to heal better. i preferred not to get it during summer since it is so far in the future, but i am not sure if 2 weeks is enough time for my nose to heal. i am a 16 year old guy

In classical art, great leaders and soldiers were often featured in profile. A profile view offered the cleanest look at the man’s face, highlighting their bone structure and shape while impressing upon the viewer their personal strength and virility. Perhaps the strongest and appealing feature on a man’s face is the nose. For many men,it can bring about feelings of insecurity and doubt. Thankfully, plastic surgery has brought relief in the form of Rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty has long been associated with plastic surgery for women. However, as people began to reevaluate their ideas of what constitutes beauty and vanity, the world of plastic surgery has opened up for men. Today, the modern man can confidently consider plastic surgery to roll back the clock and change those tiny imperfections that wear our confidence over time.

Many men look to Rhinoplasty to give them a nose that is less distinct and noticeable. A smooth symmetrical nose can allow a man’s other features to shine, accentuating the positive areas of the face. Additionally, many men find that while their nose’s shape is fine, the overall size does not ‘fit’ appropriately with the rest of their face. Likewise, a little extra cartridge can be added to give a richer, fuller look to the nose. This simple surgery can reduce or increase the overall size of the man’s nose, creating a more consistent look to their face.

Other men may be seeking something different and distinct. The right nose can bring attention to a man’s face, tying in the other features. Some men have been known to seek a nose that adds character to their face, an anchor to his overall appearance. Like the leaders of old, these men know that a distinct nose can leave a memorable impression on those they meet.

Beyond the aesthetic rewards, there are certain health benefits associated with Rhinoplasty. For those men who have lived a rough and tumble life, it is not uncommon for them to have broken their noses on numerous occasions. A broken nose can cause difficulty with breathing and sleep patterns, as well as annoying and potentially unhealthy snoring. For some a misshapen nose can lead to a lifetime of sinus problems leading to frequent infections and migraine headaches. In consultation with a general physician, Rhinoplasty can help a man overcome these problems and start living a healthier life.

The surgical process itself is safe and simple, with very few differences between the surgeries in terms of gender. Generally the patient is placed under a local or general anesthesia, depending upon the doctor’s recommendation. Once the patient is numbed, the surgeon separates the soft tissues of the nose from the underlying structures. Next, the doctor reshapes the noses cartilage, often using a small piece of the patient’s cartilage or bone to add volume and strength if needed. If for some reason the patient is unable or unwilling to use their own cartilage or bone, the doctor then uses an artificial, synthetic material to recreate the bone structure.

The Rhinoplasty process is safe and easy. Recovery time is typical for plastic surgery, and most men find that they can return to work in no more than a few days time. If you find that your nose needs some changes, consider the benefits of rhinoplasty and consult a plastic surgeon.
